CESR participated actively in the 2019 Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations HQ in New York. The priority theme of this year’s Commission was "social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality."
As well as participating in several side events and parallel events, including a parallel event by the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (of which CESR is a member) on "Financing Women’s Rights Through Tax Justice," Kate Donald (Director of CESR’s Economic and Social Policy program) had the opportunity to address the Commission in one of the official sessions. In her statement, Kate stressed that in order to finance gender equality, progressive taxation is indispensable. She also highlighted the current international tax system and illicit financial flows (which include corporate tax abuses) as the "elephant in the room" in the financing conversation.
